Avatar is set in the year 2154, when humans have depleted the natural resources of Earth and are seeking to mine a valuable mineral called unobtanium on a distant moon called Pandora. Pandora is inhabited by a humanoid race called the Na'vi, who have a strong connection to their environment and worship a goddess called Eywa. The humans use genetically engineered bodies called avatars, which are controlled by human drivers, to interact with the Na'vi and persuade them to relocate from their home tree, which stands above a large deposit of unobtanium.

The conflict between humans and Na'vi

The journey of Jake Sully

Jake Sully is a former Marine who lost the use of his legs in a war on Earth. He is offered a chance to join the avatar program as a replacement for his twin brother, who was killed by a thief. He accepts the offer, hoping to regain his mobility and earn enough money to pay for a spinal surgery. He arrives on Pandora and meets Grace Augustine, the head of the avatar program, and Norm Spellman, another avatar driver. He also meets Colonel Quaritch, who offers him a deal: if he gathers intelligence on the Na'vi and their home tree, he will get his surgery.

Jake begins his avatar training and exploration of Pandora, accompanied by Grace and Norm. He encounters Neytiri, a Na'vi princess who saves him from a pack of viperwolves. She takes him to her clan, the Omaticaya, where he is accepted as a guest after her father, Eytukan, the clan leader, and her mother, Mo'at, the spiritual leader, sense a sign from Eywa. Jake learns the language, culture, and skills of the Na'vi from Neytiri, and gradually falls in love with her. He also develops a bond with a flying creature called a banshee, which he names Toruk Makto.

Jake becomes conflicted between his loyalty to the humans and his sympathy for the Na'vi. He tries to warn the Na'vi about the impending attack by the humans, but they do not believe him. He also reveals his deal with Quaritch to Grace and Norm, who are outraged by his betrayal. Jake is exposed as a spy when Quaritch uses his video logs to incite a violent confrontation between the humans and the Na'vi. Jake is captured and imprisoned by Quaritch, along with Grace and Norm. They are rescued by Trudy Chacon, a sympathetic pilot, who helps them escape to the avatar link units.

The climax and resolution

Jake returns to the Omaticaya clan and begs for their forgiveness. He is initially rejected and beaten by Neytiri and Tsu'tey, the clan's warrior leader and Neytiri's betrothed. However, he regains their trust when he tames Toruk Makto, a legendary beast that only five Na'vi have ever ridden. He rallies the Na'vi clans to fight against the humans, who have launched a massive assault on the home tree. He also prays to Eywa to help them.

A fierce battle ensues between the humans and the Na'vi, with heavy casualties on both sides. Quaritch manages to break through the Na'vi defenses and destroy the home tree, killing Eytukan and many others. He then targets the Tree of Souls, a sacred site where the Na'vi communicate with their ancestors and Eywa. Jake and Neytiri lead a final stand against Quaritch and his forces. They are aided by Eywa, who responds to Jake's plea and sends various animals to attack the humans.

Jake confronts Quaritch in his mechanical suit and manages to kill him, but not before Quaritch damages Jake's avatar link unit. Jake's human body is suffocating and his avatar body is dying. Neytiri finds Jake's human body and revives him. She tells him that she sees him in both forms. They embrace and kiss.

The humans are defeated and expelled from Pandora, except for a few who are allowed to stay, including Norm and Trudy. Jake says goodbye to his human body and undergoes a ritual that transfers his consciousness permanently into his avatar body. He opens his eyes as a Na'vi, with Neytiri by his side.

Analysis and evaluation

The themes and messages of Avatar

Avatar explores several themes and messages that are relevant to our contemporary world. One of them is the conflict between nature and technology, or between harmony and domination. The Na'vi represent a culture that lives in balance with nature, while the humans represent a culture that exploits nature for their own benefit. The movie shows the consequences of this clash of values, such as environmental destruction, cultural genocide, and moral corruption.

Another theme is the power of love and empathy, or between connection and alienation. The movie shows how Jake's relationship with Neytiri changes his perspective and attitude towards the Na'vi and Pandora. He learns to see them as living beings with dignity and rights, not as obstacles or enemies. He also learns to appreciate the beauty and wonder of Pandora, which he initially sees as hostile and dangerous. The movie suggests that love and empathy are essential for overcoming prejudice and hatred.

The visual effects and cinematography of Avatar

Avatar is widely acclaimed for its stunning and groundbreaking visual effects and cinematography, which create a realistic and immersive experience for the audience. The movie uses a combination of motion capture, computer-generated imagery, and 3D technology to bring the world of Pandora and its inhabitants to life. The movie also uses a new camera system called the Fusion Camera System, which allows the director to capture the actors' performances in 3D and in real time. The movie also employs a high frame rate of 48 frames per second, which enhances the clarity and smoothness of the motion.

The movie also showcases a variety of breathtaking and spectacular scenes, such as the floating mountains, the bioluminescent forest, the Tree of Souls, and the final battle. The movie uses a rich and vibrant color palette, which contrasts the natural beauty of Pandora with the artificial and dull appearance of the human base. The movie also uses a dynamic and creative camera work, which follows the movements and perspectives of the characters, especially during the flying and action sequences.

The performance and direction of Avatar

Avatar also features a stellar performance and direction, which complement the visual effects and cinematography. The movie has a talented and diverse cast, which includes Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Grace Augustine, Stephen Lang as Colonel Quaritch, Michelle Rodriguez as Trudy Chacon, and Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge. The actors deliver convincing and emotional performances, despite the challenges of acting in a motion capture environment. They also express the physicality and personality of their characters, especially the Na'vi, who have different body language and expressions than humans.

The movie is also directed by James Cameron, who is known for his visionary and ambitious movies, such as Titanic, Terminator, and Aliens. Cameron is praised for his passion and dedication to his craft, as well as his attention to detail and innovation. He spent over a decade developing and refining the story, technology, and design of Avatar. He also collaborated with experts and consultants from various fields, such as linguistics, anthropology, botany, zoology, and physics. He also immersed himself in the culture and environment of Pandora, by visiting tropical rainforests and learning from indigenous people.
